What is meant by two stroke or four stroke engine?


What is meant by one stroke, two stroke, three stroke or four stroke engine?

Piston goes up compresses gas = 1 stroke
Piston goes down after gas explodes = 2nd stroke
Piston goes up and blows exhaust out = 3rd stroke
Piston goes down and sucks in gas/air mixture = 4th stroke

That is 4 stroke, or cycles. This gives two revolutions to the crankshaft.

Piston goes up compresses gas = 1 stroke
Piston goes down after gas explodes, expells exhaust, sucks in air/fuel/oil mixture, = 2nd stroke.

This leads to 1 revolution of the crankshaft per cycle, thus "two strokes"

There are no three strokes, or one strokes.

What kind of gas do i use in my 2 stroke rc airplane engine? can i use regular?


I have an older maybe 70's model of a 2 stroke engine for a model airplane. I hooked up the gas tank but i need to know what type of gas to use thanx

It depends on the engine. If it's a "glow plug" engine, as most were in the 1970's, you need to use glow fuel, a mixture of methanol, nitromethane, and oil... you purchase it at a hobby shop. If it's a spark ignition engine, then you use a gasoline/oil mixture like a chain saw or weed eater. Your best bet is to contact a local R/C club or hobby shop and ask them what to use.

    Two of the things that stood out to me were the amount of time one of these movies is worked on. I think your article said 5 years from idea to finish? That's incredible. So much staying power. I would like to better understand how someone could stay enthusiastic for he same project for 5 years. Though I guess they don't have a choice after it gets going.

    The other thing was about the physics in the film. Every modern videogame has some kind of physics engine used to guide player interaction with the world and its objects, but this is the first I've heard of a film using it. Very cool.
