Plans Hawker

What are some MUST TRY dishes in Singapore?!?!?
I'm an American and I'll be visiting Singapore soon. I am absolutely obsessed with food, and from the sounds of it, so are the Singaporeans!!! I'm so excited to try the food, esp at the hawker centers. So, what dishes do you suggest that I try? I already plan on getting some chili crab, chicken rice, and char kway teow. What else should i get? Also, where do you suggest I get it (what are your favorite places to get your suggested dishes)? I'll be there over a week and am willing to try as much as possible, nothin scares me lol.
Thanks!!
yep, Singapore is a food mecca, especially if you like it spicy!
the hawker centres are amazing, and you'll see lots of stalls with big lines, which is a good indication! you'll also spot plates of food which look tasty, people are really friendly and happy when ang moh (white people) are keen and adventurous with their cuisine, so you could just point to someone's plate and say you want what they're having.. might even start some conversations!
I can definitely recommend laksa (of course), char kway teaw and chicken rice are definitely a must, as is a plate of roast duck, char siew (bbq pork) and rice with greens (there are stalls that do just this!), look out for satay/meat skewer stalls, and rojak is an experience.. I've had awesome ones and not so great ones. Congee is another experience, go the full entrail one if you are feeling up to it! also do a tea house (better with a group though) and bubble tea (cold drinks with tapioca pearls), fresh coconut and palm juice, and go to the wet markets to see all the fresh food/fish/frogs etc.
if you want to check out some nicer restaurants, but also to check on recommendations for specific hawkers/cafes etc, check out the food blog: www.chubbyhubby.net/blog he a Singaporean gourmand with heaps of reviews.
hope you have an awesome trip, don't be afraid to ask people what they're eating and start a conversation, but from memory Singaporeans like to joke around, I know it's not really the american style, so don't take their ribbing personally! if you make friends you will be treated to great hospitality, people might even show you the hidden gems!
edit: OMG, and I totally forgot to mention roti canai!!

Kenya’s Smartest Money Strategy for the Common Citizen
Hawkers in Kenya are known to be most unsettled business people ever. Fighting across the streets with the city council police all the time. But this has finally come to an end. Someone sat down on his couch and thought that Muthurwa Market could become a good Hawkers market. A good thought implemented; now it is working though slowly.
However I have noted that Kenyans are allergic to change. The government has come to terms with this phobia and is getting used to it. The public vehicles (commonly known as matatus) owners couldn’t agree more on being vacated out of town to do their business in Muthurwa Market. This was just so hard for so many. I overheard a conversation between a “Matatu” conductor and a passenger talking about the strike that was planned by some Matatu owners.
As much as they want to go back to town to pick passengers from there, they are still eager to get some good results out of Muthurwa Market. So they are what I call posi-negatively charged victims. Sorry for them. The Minister Honorable Uhuru Kenyatta won’t laugh with them at this point. He says that the little houses remaining that seem to block “a solution to be found” can as well be demolished just so that they can get a bigger space to pack their vehicles and pick their passengers. At least they are coming into terms with that.
Another prominent phobia is evident in passengers. They are finding it hard to come into terms with walking. I believe this is a hidden strategy for Kenyans to lose their weight and wake up early to go to work. If I ask you now, in what direction is Kenya heading right now, what would you tell me? I believe you would say, its positive. I expect great change in the next five years. People are now working harder; no sleeping any more, the disabled can now work. Nobody should really complain.
One important aspect I have to praise is the fact that town has become professionally presentable to anyone. There is a lot of silence, fresh air, no jam and the only public service vehicles available during the day are the so called beautiful buses that wait patently for passengers to board and alight with respect, they don’t bang, they don’t say “faster faster” just what Kenyans need for Nairobi town as the capital city. It is now presentable!
Muthurwa market is beautiful. Hawkers have found a place and a long term place to sell their products. It is up to us now to support them. Whether you as a Kenyan, or a tourist, just go to Muthurwa market and buy the beautiful products on display. Promote them and lets all contribute in Developing Kenya.
