Full Range Why didn't the AresX-I carry a full range of test flight like Saturn 5 or Columbia ?
Does this mean that there haven't sufficient self-confidence in NASA's top offciers for its success of the Ares I-X?
does this mean that the top officers of NASA have not sufficient self-confidence for its success?
they probably have a good reason
from wikipedia this is the configuration, notice the large number of dummies
"Configuration
* First stage: live, four-segment reusable solid rocket booster with a dummy fifth segment.
* Second stage: dummy (future upper stage, J-2X motor)
* Third stage: dummy (future instrument package)
* Fourth stage: Orion Boilerplate with Launch Abort System (LAS)[1]
"
so you're asking why not do a full dress rehearsal which includes all stages and ends up with something in orbit?
I dont know. Maybe the other stages are still in development. Wiki says this is a very early prototype so even stage 1 is still in development
"The Ares I-X vehicle used in the test flight was similar in shape, weight, and size to the planned configuration of later Ares I vehicles, but had largely dissimilar internal hardware."
and this is not unlike saturn
"The Ares I-X flight profile resembled the uncrewed Saturn I flights of the 1960s, which tested the Saturn propulsion concept."
Remember, these guys are rocket scientists, they do things differently. They have NO OBLIGATION to do things the way a mere civilian thinks it should be done.
For example I'm a surgeon and I have to educate and correct many of my patients because as laymen they dont have the knowledge and do things that seem OK to them but actually are disastrous to their health.
So they probably had a very good reason for limiting this first test flight. Its pretty logical to test one part at a time instead of risking it all in one go.

Although Nilsson didn't select the tracks for this two-CD collection drawn from his '60s and '70s work for RCA, Personal Best generously touches on the many sides of his musical personality: the whimsical (his layered version of the Beatles' "You Can't Do That"), the soaring ("Without You," "Don't Leave Me"), and the flat-out oddball (a cover of the Louis Jordan-Ray Charles classic "Early in the Morning")...

Released almost exactly 11 years after Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Kevin Costner's Open Range proved yet again that the Western is the classic American genre. While it lacks the thematic impact of Eastwood's masterpiece, Costner's first film since 1997's ill-fated The Postman returns the actor/director of Dances With Wolves to the open prairies of America--in this case the free-range frontier of 1882--where legal "free-grazing" cattle drives were falling prey to empire-building land-owners...
Do dogs exhibit self-awareness and the full range of human emotions?
I am having a disagreement with a friend on the degree of self-awareness and emotional capabilities of my dog.
What do you think?
No. As far as self-awareness, there have been studies done with chimps, elephants, and dolphins:
As far as emptions - we humans like to ascribe emotion to many things that our dogs do. We like to say that a dog is "sorry for (X) behavior" when we see the dog doing appeasement gestures, when the reality is that the dog is attempting to offset tension by trying to be small and puppy-like. This serves to diffuse percieved aggression or a tense situation in the dog's world. But we cannot assume from this that a dog has got morals and values - they do not.
For more, read Patricia B. McConnell - She has a lot to say about the Walt Disney view of dogs vs. reality.
Good question!
