net force and tension?

15000 kg helicopter lifts a 3800 kg truck with an upward acceleration of 1.5 m/s2.

(a) Calculate the net upward force on the helicopter blades from the air.
(b) Calculate the tension in the cable between helicopter and truck. (assume cable has no mass)

gravity only acts down on objects you cannot add it to an upward acceleration
in this case notice that for part a both the helicopter and truck are traveling upwards so you may treat this as one object being pulled by and acceleration of 1.5m/s^2 where there is a force done by gravity going down and a force done by the blades going up.
so you get
Total force=ma=Force of blades - Force done by gravity(15000kg+3800kg)(1.5m/s^2)=Fblades - (15000kg+3800kg)(9.8m/s^2)
28200N=Fblades - 184240N
Fblades=28200N+184240N=212440N
so the force done by the blades is 212,440N

(b) notice that the rope is holding up the truck while being pulled by an upward acceleration. the forces acting on the truck are gravity and the tension on the rope(pulled by helicopter).
so you have
so total force of truck=ma=tension-weight of truck
rewrite to get
tension=ma+weight of truck
tension=( 3800kg)(1.5m/s^2)+(3800kg)(9.8m/s^2)
tension=5700N+37240N
tension=42,940N
