Brushed Motor How to calculate input power and output power of a DC motor?
For a brushed dc motor, what formula should i use?
The input power calculation is relatively easy.
Just use P=VI in watts. This is ELECTRICAL power input.
The output power measurement is a little harder. The easiest if you have a clutch, you can measure the output torque and speed it runs at, then calculate the horsepower, then convert to watts.
If you don't have the clutch and associated readouts and software....
then it may be done with a little math, a tachometer(prefer a stoboscope) a DMM and another DC motor.
What you are trying to achieve is finding the BEMF, which is Ke.
Then use that value, multiply it by 1.3524. This will tell you how much torque is put out per amp of input current.
Then you can equate speed with current since they are proportional, then you can calculate the watts. It's rather a round about way of doing it, with minimal equipment.
You can use the below websites to help crank out the numbers. Otherwise, you are left with just getting the data sheet from the motor mfg.

How can I rewire an old 12 volt car generator to run as a 12 volt motor? It has 2 brushes.?
I tried hooking it to a 12 volt car battery last night and it won't start turning. This generator has windings instead of permanent magnets, does that change things.
Thanks
Rob
You just need to hook it up to a battery charger and turn it up on engine cranking and it should do. The older it is the more volts it may take but make sure it is dc volts. Then if it doesn't work try turning it a little to get it started then if doesn't work throw it away it doesn't work.
