Blade Grips

I heard that washing knife, scissors, blender's blade with hot water would make them dull easily. Is it true?

If it's true, is there any scientific explanations why it happens? Because I dun wanna hear that someone hear it from someone else. I just need a scientific proves.
I also have a Japanese Knife Set, and inside the guideline said that I shoudn't put it inside the dishwasher because it'd damage "the material". I'm not sure if "the material" means the blade, or maybe the material of the grip. And I just assume that inside the dishwasher is maybe too hot for the knives.
Please help me, I love my knives! (They are so expensive!)

There should be no reason to not use hot water when washing metal kitchen utensils by hand. As long as you dry them off immeadiately you should see no ill affects on these utensils.

Along the lines of the 'don't put in dishwasher' warning is that you will be better off:
1) not allowing the knifes to bang around with other metal pieces - obviously banging the knives around can result in dull areas.
2) not allowing water to sit on the knives, or be damp for long periods.
3) dishwasher detergents can promote corrosion

for items 2 and 3, both of these go to promoting corrosion of the materials. General corrosion will result in slight dulling (probably unoticeable for one washing cycle). But automatic dishwashing detergents have some unfriendly chemicals in them to basically aid in digesting food particles to get your dishes clean. If some of this chemical remains on the knife, then the knife starts to dry, the chemicals in that spot will get more and more concentrated as the water evaportates. This can result in a very aggressive solution that can attack and disrupt the passive layer of stainless steels, resulting in rust spots. So if you were to immeadiately rinse and dry off the knives after being run throught the automatic dishwasher you may be ok, but then what is the point of using an automatic dishwasher.

The extended high temperature, plus water, plus chemicals of the automatic dishwasher can also damage some of the handle materials. Not many plastics do well in very hot water for extended periods of time along with the thermal cycling of a dish washer.

Washing by hand usually uses lower temperatures (that your hand can withstand) compared to the very high temperatures in a dishwasher and the time of exposure is generally. Both of these are reasons to not worry about washing by hand.
