In a Lycoming or Continental aircraft engine, camshafts are made out of what material?


I can't seem to find in my book that which a camshaft is made out of? I'm guessing it's some sort of Aluminum alloy or can it possibly be just aluminum?

Camshafts are never made of aluminum. It is to soft for the pressure and torque exerted on a camshaft.
Camshafts are usually made from either hardened cast steel or billet steel. Once machined they are surface hardened to withstand the wear of lifters/cam followers constantly wearing on the lobes.

How much power is removed from an aircraft engine through the use of an alternator?


I would like to know this in regards to commercial aircraft. Any information regarding powering on-board electrical systems would be greatly appreciated.

Commercial aircraft use fairly large generators, but they still aren't big enough to make much of a difference. While I can't post any specific numbers, I can say that the power lost generating electricity is negligible. Commercial aircraft generate thousands upon thousands of pounds of thrust, yet the electrical systems on board can be powered by a generator with output measured in horsepower.
